Game Day + Puzzle Exchange (04/16/2026)

LET THE GAMES BEGIN! Bring a friend or neighbor to play card and board games like Scrabble, Dominoes, Sequence, Hearts, Rummikub, Boggle, Qwirkle, and more. Bring your own favorite games to share with neighbors. We'll also be hosting a puzzle exchange so bring a puzzle (with all the pieces!) and take a new one home with you.

Enjoy snacks and have a fun evening on Thursday, April 16 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the East Asheville Library. This free event is sponsored by the Haw Creek Community Association and we'd like to thank neighbor Susan Michael for hosting.

Registration is appreciated, but feel free to just show up and join the fun!

Guided Wildflower Hikes (04/18/2026)

Our home here in the southern Blue Ridge is one of the most biologically diverse ecoregions in the world, containing an abundance of different wildflower species. The wildflowers that bloom in the spring, before the trees leaf-out, are called “spring ephemerals” and are most beautiful. Join us for a hike where you will learn the habitats and identity of these wonderful natural neighbors.

Long-time Haw Creek resident Bernard Arghiere is offering two opportunities to hike and learn about the local wildflowers. Participation is limited to 15 people per hike, so register today for one of these educational hikes.

Masters Park to Haw Creek Overlook*

This will be about a 2.5 mile hike roundtrip, starting at the parking lot on Maple Drive and hiking through Masters Park up to the Mountains-to-Sea Trail and the "overlook" rock area. View all of the wildflowers seen on this trail. This hike will take place on Saturday, April 18 (Sunday, April 19 rain date).

Mountains-to-Sea Trail to CRAVEN GAP*

This will be about a 3.5 mile hike one-way. After first meeting at the Folk Art Center to carpool, the hike will start at the Mountains-to-Sea Trail above Sondley, hiking north on the trail until reaching Craven Gap on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This hike promises to provide some spectacular diversity of wildflower species – two years ago there were over 75 different flowering species on this route, including three different native orchids. This hike will take place on Saturday, April 25 (Sunday, April 26 rain date).

*Please note the following information for both hikes:

Both hikes require some fitness, as there is significant climbing and rough terrain.
Please dress appropriately and bring your own water bottle.
These events are free but you must register so that we can contact you.
In the event the weather takes a turn for the worse, we will send an email by 9:00 pm the night before postponing the hike to the next day.
Participation is limited to 15 people per hike, with no more than two participants from one household due to limited group size.

Meet your Guide

Bernie has been studying wildflowers for over 30 years. He completed the Blue Ridge Naturalist program at the NC Arboretum in 2013, and has taught as an instructor at the UNC-Asheville Lifelong Learning Institute since 2006. Bernie is a board member of the Asheville Botanical Garden and has served for 9 years on the Board of Trustees for the North Carolina Chapter of The Nature Conservancy.

Community Yard Sale (05/02/2026)

Spring is here! It's time to clean out your closets, garage or attic and join our multi-family community-wide yard sale. Plan ahead and reserve your spot at Groce UMC for the spring yard sale on Saturday, May 2 from 8 am to 1 pm. This yard sale has become very popular and a successful community event.

Sponsored by the Haw Creek Community Association, vendor/seller spots are $15 (two adjoining spots are $30). Register online to reserve your space (each spot is 9' by 18'). Registration is limited to a total of 56 spots due to space limitations.

Free admission and parking for shoppers. Hot dogs, drinks and homemade baked goods for sale to benefit HCCA. Rain or shine event.

Haw Creek Hustle (05/16/2026)

The Haw Creek Community Association is hosting our third annual 5K race, the Haw Creek Hustle, on Saturday, May 16. Join us at Charlie Bullman Park for a celebratory fun run, a timed 5K race, and the post-race celebration. This event is intended to bring the community together, not just to hustle, but also to socialize with neighbors, meet new friends, enjoy some fresh air, and make lasting memories.

Again this year, runners will be entertained by the Haw Creek Pickers performing on the front lawn of St. John's Episcopal Church during the race. Neighbors are welcome to enjoy the music and cheer on the racers.

HCCA is working with Glory Hound Events to ensure a fun and successful event. They are handling registration and all race information is available on their Haw Creek Hustle page.

The race fees are $35 5K run or walk and $10 Fun Run until May 1 , when it increases to $40. Please register online.

If you'd like to support this community event but don't feel like participating in the race, you can register and just not run the race, or you can make a donation (select Haw Creek Hustle as the fund type).

All the event proceeds will go to HCCA to support our work in the community, and this year we will be sharing the net receipts with WNCYSA for their Charlie Bullman Park Rebuild Project.

All 5K runners will receive a custom race shirt. Fun runners will receive a fun prize at the finish line. Water and light snacks will be provided near the finish line. Please bring your own water bottle to fill to minimize environmental impact.

The awards ceremony for the 5K race will take place at approximately 10:15 am near the finish area. Special prizes will be presented to the top three overall male and female and top masters (40 and over) male and female. Awards will be given to the top 3 male and female finishers in various age groups, including 12 and under. Lots of awards mean lots of fun!

Don't forget to bring cash to purchase a ticket for the HCCA raffle. The drawing will be held during the race awards ceremony. This year's raffle features a great selection of items generously provided by local businesses and community partners—you won't want to miss it!
