Committees

We have established a number of committees in order to organize our work and increase our effectiveness. Led by board volunteers, projects range from short-term activities to long-range initiatives.

The following list provides examples of current projects. If you're interested in helping, please email info@hawcreekavl.com with your contact information (name, address and phone number) and indicate the type of volunteer work you’re interested in. We’ll respond as soon as we can. Thank you!

Clean & Green Committee

Works to improve local parks (Haw Creek Park and Masters Park), environmental conditions affecting Haw Creek,

and the beautification of our neighborhood

Projects include: cleaning up litter; removing invasive plants; undertaking beautification initiatives, including improving the planter boxes at the library; increasing wildfire awareness, promoting plastic reduction efforts

and storm drain adoption

Community Outreach Committee

Works to provide community connections by sponsoring educational programs, social events and other activities

Projects include: hosting community potlucks, yard sales, game days, local hikes, meet your neighbors evenings, and the Haw Creek Hustle 5k race/walk; organizing City Council Candidates forums and BearWise presentations; interviewing and preparing stories of amazing Haw Creek residents; welcoming new neighbors

Sidewalk, Greenways & Pedestrian Safety Committee

Works to increase sidewalks and greenways, improve pedestrian safety

Projects include: working with the city on the New Haw Creek Road sidewalk extension; building a greenway along Haw Creek from Arco Road to Beverly Road; improving pedestrian safety at lower Beverly Road

Open Space Preservation Committee

Works to secure undeveloped land for conservation and/or public use

Projects include: identifying large tracts of undeveloped land within Haw Creek that are easily accessible with flat or sloping pasture (ie: land that can be repurposed for parks without having to make significant changes), reaching out to landowners, seeking conservation opportunities

Works to promote and integrate communications and membership efforts

Projects include: improving website functionality and expanding content; extending social media presence; strengthening communications; increasing membership; undertaking fundraising efforts
