Are you interested in planting fruit trees in your yard but are unsure how to care for them? Do you already have fruit trees and want to learn how to maximize their health and fruit production? Do you learn better from hands-on instruction rather than from reading books? Then this workshop is for you.
Justin Holt, a fruit and nut grower as well as an agroforestry consultant, will teach the basic principles of pruning and training fruit trees. After an indoor presentation, the class will move outdoors to get some hands-on experience pruning a variety of tree species (apple, pear, and peach) and ages (young and mature).
Attendees should bring their own hand pruners and pruning saw. If you don’t own these tools, it is recommended that you purchase them at a local garden or hardware store. Those looking for more information about the right hand pruners and pruning saw to buy can find it here.
Cofounder of the Asheville Nuttery and the Nutty Buddy Collective, Justin has been caring for fruit trees since 2010 and currently maintains eight acres of orchards in Leicester, NC.
Plan to join us on Saturday, February 24 (March 16 rain date), from 10 am to 12 pm at the Haw Creek Commons for this workshop with a local expert.
This is one of several gardening programs that HCCA is hosting for our community this spring. Online registration and payment of a $25 fee is required. Participation is limited to 15 people.
In the event the weather takes a turn for the worse, we will send an email by 9:00 pm Friday evening postponing the workshop to March 16.
