The Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a special mid-month public hearing regarding the conditional zoning request for dense development of the 767 New Haw Creek Road property. This hearing will be held on Wednesday, March 20th at 5:00 pm and, in anticipation of broad public interest, the meeting has been moved from City Hall to a larger venue at Harrah's Cherokee Center.

This is your opportunity to be heard. Even if you're not interested in speaking, your presence is vitally important so please plan to join us. The Planning & Zoning Commission, a City Council-appointed board, will review the development proposal, hear public testimony, and then make a recommendation to City Council.  

Public comment will be accepted by the following means:  

  • In-person: Presentations by the public shall be limited to a maximum of 3 minutes for individuals and 10 minutes for a group’s primary spokesperson.
  • Written public comments: may be submitted by email to PZCommissioners@ashevillenc.gov Comments should be submitted by 5 p.m. the day prior to the meeting.

NOTICE: The Planning and Zoning Commission will hear public comments only on agenda items. Any public comments received prior to the deadline will be provided to the Commission but may not be read aloud or played at the meeting.

The Planning and Zoning Commission is an advisory board to City Council that:

  • reviews text for proposed amendments to the Unified Development Ordinance
  • hears proposals to zone or change the zoning of property regulated under the Unified Development Ordinance, then makes recommendations to City Council for final action
  • performs studies and surveys of the present conditions and probable future development of the City and its environs
  • formulates and recommends to City Council the adoption or amendment of a comprehensive plan and other plans
  • reviews the terms of the Unified Development Ordinance from time to time, as it deems appropriate
  • reviews applications for planned unit development designation and preliminary plans
  • reviews and decides on approval of all proposed preliminary plats for major subdivision
  • and performs such additional powers and duties as may be set forth elsewhere in the Unified Development Ordinance and in other laws and regulations
