Firewise Community Project

Haw Creek includes residents originating from all across the country – many from locations with histories of significant wildfires like California and Texas. In 2024, the HCCA initiated a planning effort to educate and engage our citizens about the potential for wildfires in the valley. Even before tropical storm Helene, the valley was considered at moderate risk for wildfires due to the proximity to forested areas and steep slopes.
"Homes adjacent to or surrounded by fuels and vegetation are vulnerable to wildfire, especially in areas of steep slopes where fire response may be more challenging. Some residential areas such as Swannanoa Hills, Haw Creek, and Chins Cove/Wolfe Cove have a number of properties that are at risk for wildfire."
-Asheville Climate Resilience Report, 2019
The Association submitted an application to the City of Asheville in early 2024 for a Neighborhood Matching grant to start a Firewise Community project in the valley. Helene delayed the project approval but we were successful in getting the grant in early 2025.
The project's purpose to actively engage residents in understanding and reducing wildfire risk, empowering neighbors to take practical steps to protect their homes and families. The long-term goal is for Haw Creek to achieve official recognition as a Firewise USA community.
