HCCA is moving forward with a comprehensive effort to address the growing presence of non-native invasive plant species in Haw Creek Park, in partnership with EcoForesters and the City of Asheville. Invasive vegetation has been an increasing concern in the park for several years. 

We initially focused volunteer efforts on removing kudzu along Avon Road, but the scope of the problem extends well beyond that area. Invasive vines and other non-native vegetation have spread throughout the park, competing with native plants and threatening the health of remaining canopy trees.

The proliferation of dense invasive ground cover and shrubby vegetation has also changed the character of portions of the park, reducing accessibility and the overall experience for park users.

A Comprehensive Plan for the Park

Recognizing that a coordinated, park-wide approach is needed, HCCA engaged EcoForesters to evaluate Haw Creek Park and develop a comprehensive plan for invasive plant removal and long-term control.

The plan calls for a collaborative effort involving EcoForesters’ forestry and invasive-species expertise, HCCA volunteers, and City of Asheville staff. The partnership is intended to combine professional guidance and planning with community volunteer labor and municipal operational support.

The Asheville City Council is supporting the initiative by allocating City staff time to participate in several major cleanup events planned for early 2027. The City will also provide future assistance with removing and disposing of invasive plant material collected through volunteer efforts.

The initiative has three primary objectives: control the spread of invasive vegetation, protect the park’s remaining native trees and plant communities, and improve Haw Creek Park for residents and visitors.

The work will be conducted as a long-term management effort rather than a one-time cleanup. Continued monitoring, follow-up removal, and community involvement will be important to prevent invasive species from reestablishing after initial treatment.

Haw Creek Park Greenway Update

HCCA is continuing to advance the Haw Creek Park Greenway project and is working to resolve the remaining requirements needed to begin building the greenway. Construction is currently delayed while the project team finalizes remaining land-rights issues, including arrangements related to the long-term maintenance of the section of greenway located on private property.

Once those remaining property and land-rights details are resolved, the contractors already selected for the project will be positioned to begin construction.

The pre-construction process—including funding, property rights, permitting, and related project requirements—has represented a significant portion of the time required to advance the project. The actual construction phase is expected to be substantially shorter.

We will continue to provide updates as both projects progress. Our focus remains on protecting and improving Haw Creek Park while advancing projects that enhance access to and enjoyment of this important neighborhood resource.
