City Council Approves 767 Development Proposal

07/24/2024 12:27 PM | Christina Maggi (Administrator)

Asheville City Council voted by a 5-1 margin to approve the 767 development proposal at their July 23 meeting. Over one hundred Haw Creek residents were on hand to witness the outcome of this contentious nine-month campaign. Although we won significant improvements to the original plan, success is laden with sadness over how the issue has divided our community.

A more complete report will be coming soon. For now, here is the site plan approved last evening.

It might help close the rift if HCCA could enumurate the way in which the development is going to benifit or complement the Happy Vally neighborhood, or improve the environment, or fix the traffic issues, or enhance the health and safety of our community. Other than lowering our property values, what is in this that benifits the neighborhood most impacted by the development?

Besides a reduction from the 95 homes originally proposed to the 84 approved by City Council, this project also extends new sidewalk from Bell Rd to Sleepy Hollow Dr via Charlie Bullman Park. It also includes a greenway to run alongside the creek. It also preserves 5.65 acres of forest canopy and provides the opportunity for public trails within the east side forest. Finally, the approved plan expands natural tree buffering on the west side behind the townhomes.
